Inside This Session:
Before diving into legal practice, it’s essential to understand the structure and function of the legal system itself. This seminar provides a foundational overview of how the American legal system operates at the federal, state, and local levels, giving participants the context needed to navigate legal concepts and court procedures confidently.
You’ll learn how power is distributed across the three levels of government, how federalism shapes the system, and how checks and balances maintain accountability. The seminar also covers the difference between primary and secondary legal authority, the role of the Supremacy Clause, and how common law fits into the larger body of enacted laws.
Additional topics include the structure of state and federal courts, the legislative process, the role of administrative agencies, and how jurisdiction is determined both by subject matter and geography. We’ll also examine the adversary system and its role in shaping how legal disputes are resolved.
This session is ideal for those beginning a career in law or anyone who wants a clearer picture of how the legal system functions behind the scenes.
